Criminal Law
Representation of suspects, defendants, victims and intervening parties during investigation and trial.
Criminal matters in Türkiye are governed by the Turkish Penal Code No. 5237, which defines offences and penalties, and the Code of Criminal Procedure No. 5271, which regulates investigation and trial.
During the investigation, a suspect has the right to the assistance of defence counsel when giving a statement (Criminal Procedure Code Arts. 147 and 149). Decisions on police custody, pre-trial detention and judicial control can be challenged through the remedies provided by law. At trial, counsel defends the accused, while victims may file complaints, join the proceedings as an intervening party and be represented.
For foreign nationals, a criminal investigation may also have consequences under immigration law, such as entry bans or deportation, which should be considered at an early stage.
